I find it hard to believe that thus far the leading answer to the poll question is “connect with like-minded people”. From my personal experience with social sites like twitter, most people are writing about what new content was recently added to their commercial website, rather than trying to strike up a conversation in the hopes of making a new friend. I think “marketing” is the number one reason why the majority of people utilize social media.
