I disagree with much of this. For instance, in some cases, it is OK to pitch several editors or reporters at the same outlet. If you get no response from an editor due to his/her busy-ness or simple lack of courtesy, go elsewhere in the paper or outlet. Your are acting on behalf of a paying client. I speak from experience. I pitched a story to a non-responsive editor. I went elsewhere to the paper. The story got published. Ironically, said unresponsive editor called 10 days after the initial pitch declaring she was interested! And she works for a NEWSpaper. My view is that it's OK to pitch several people at the same outlet, as long as you let them know who else you have pitched to - it's a basic courtesy.

Jeff, thank you so much for this excellent post. Sarah, thank you so much for sharing this! I completely agree with doing background research on whom the pitch is going to, and it's something I already do when I'm choosing contacts for a media list. I'm currently an intern and trying to learn all that I can, and your post is extremely helpful and great advice.

Great post Jeff! I was so glad to see you say "It is okay to pitch a story to different outlets. It is not okay to pitch a story to different reporters at the same outlet." I find myself having to explain this to users of our (BurrellesLuce) Media Contacts service as to WHY it brings back one journalist with that beat at each outlet versus every one with that beat. I will definitely refer to your post in the future! :-)
