Don’t know the cause, but HOW TO stop (unintentional) Twitter posts to Facebook

For the past hour or so, it looks like many people’s Twitter posts (or tweets) are also posting to their Facebook accounts. I don’t know the cause, but I did find a way to successfully stop it per a tweet from @KatieKrafka.

Here’s what worked for me:

Go to a Facebook status populated from Twitter and click on the hyperlink below the post.

Then click on “block application.” (I’ve already blocked the application, so this screen shot reflects “remove blocked application.”)

There may be several ways to stop the updates, however this worked for me. If you have any information or background on what caused the updates, feel free to share.

Update #1: I had not installed (knowingly) any applications to update my Facebook account from Twitter posts.

Same problem occurred with Friendfeed posting to my profile, at the exact same time the Twitter application started doing it. Can also remove the applications altogether which seems to have worked also. I found them here:

This seems to be some problem with this app, it somehow got enabled in your fb profile. But sometimes it’s handy to have tweets forwarded to fb feed, and “Selective Twitter” (also fb app) solves the problem!

No need to block the Twitter app entirely. At Facebook, click “Applications” in the bottom left, and from the resulting menu pick “Edit Applications”. Show “Allowed to Post” apps. Find the Twitter app on that list. Remove the posting permission by editing those settings. Done.

Wow, now not even that is working. It worked for hours. But now my tweets just started re-publishing themselves to Facebook. Wild!

Thank you so much for this. I had no idea it was happening, and rarely check FB, so would’ve spammed my fb friends for a WHILE without the tips. Just wow.

What I wanted to add is that I *had* installed the twitter app a while ago, and had turned it off a couple months ago. I’m VERY annoyed that it was turned back on without my consent/notification.

    Thanks again.

I sync over my Twitter stream on a selective basis with Tweet Sync. You program it to allow only tweets with certain keywords to sync or use a keyword to disallow syncing. Features also inlde blocking RT Via and hashtags from populating Facebook.

Sharing across multiple platforms should be done on a case by case customizable basis.

I’ve noticed that if you go to your Wall and delete a news feed (status) posted by you (via Twitter), a box pops up that says “Don’t allow Twitter” to post to my page without my consent” or something like that! I just noticed it and tried, but haven’t been able to see if it works yet! Great post!

Republishing tweets on your facebook account is a waste of time. It only benefits facebook friends who don’t use twitter. At the same time, those people are probably not on twitter for a reason. So why should they be bombarded with pointless tweets through a different website?

Facebook Groups are unable to have “status updates”. What you need is a Facebook Page for your band. After you’ve created your page, send a message out to all the members encouraging them to “fan” your page to make sure your transition is seamless.
