WHYD4YCT? = What have you done for your community today?
NOTE: While I refer to community in this post, it is not limited to only your online networks. I intend for it to mean all communities: family, friends (virtual and in real life), peers and business associates, etc.
I ask myself this question daily. It doesn’t mean I always have an answer or know if I’ve “done” anything. It’s the purpose behind asking the question. This is the mindset I aspire to be in when interacting with people. It aligns with one of my favorite Covey habits, “seek first to understand, then be understood.”
This particular habit centers around the understanding of the other person – what they want, need and aspire to as well as what their motivations and mindset are.
Powerful interactions take place and exciting opportunities arise when you approach community this way. When a conversation or meeting doesn’t go the way I expected it, I can usually look back and see I didn’t approach it from the right mindset. I was most likely too concerned with WIIFM (what’s in it for me). Believe me, after several years of developing this habit, I still need to reconnect and remind myself.
I’m not providing tips on this post or implying you should do something with the information. I merely want to share the idea and let you do with it what you’d like.
I’m going to frame WHYD4YCT? and put it above my desk along next to my mission statement. If you want a copy of the image I’m going to post, email me at prsarahevans at gmail dot com and I’ll send you a copy.
What does WHYD4YCT? mean to you?

I just put WHYD4YCT? on a post-it on my computer. An excellent mantra for those of us trying to make the most of our social media experience.
I also enjoy “it’s an earpiece, not a megaphone.” For me, it means giving valuable content, not just spouting marketing jargon. I hope I can deliver interesting information rather that adding to the clutter.August 26th, 2009 at 3:00 pm -

This is such a timely post for me! Thanks, Sarah. I work in PR/Communications as a day job, and volunteer those skills with a few international aid/development organizations. I had the best meeting this morning with one of these groups, about community, and this very concept. It’s so important, especially when dealing with the issue of global poverty. We can’t do it all, but when we work together, we accomplish so much good. It makes me happy and excited to be part of this community. Many of these people I’ve met via social media. Great stuff, Sarah!

I agree that everyone who manages a community should have this quote in mind. When you always have your community’s needs in mind, it is much easier to improve the community. It is too easy to disregard other people and do things your own way. If only more politicians had this mindset.
