Leaders: Don’t disconnect from what made you successful

Once you’re out of a professional role for more than a year it’s probably changed. Jobs change (or evolve), the requirements change, resources change, etc. There are many influences. Think about what technology alone has done.

Remember what it was like when you were in an assistant or associate role? It doesn’t hurt to brush up on your basics and hone the skills that helped you move ahead.  In fact, they might take you more time than you remember.  It may also give you a greater appreciation for those who do the tasks on a daily (or regular) basis.

If you’re in a leadership role, don’t become too disconnected from those things that led you to where you are today.

    Especially in this ever changing economy I think people need to remember their roots and what got them there in the first place. The economy is changing and maybe you have to adapt to a different role then you thought.

    To be a good leader you definitely have to be able to relate to the work others around you are doing. People won’t respect you as a leader if you have no clue what you are asking of people.

    While this may certainly be true for many professions, I would not say that it is true wholesale. More “traditional” jobs (such as Master Craftsmanship, Architecture and Construction, etc.) evolve, but have not changed fundamentally, and experience and creativity remain paramount skill sets.

    The tools we use evolve, but it is nothing that makes you obsolete in just a year. It is true that leaders often loose the most basic skills and we truly need the “well rounded” professionals who both possess the experience and can use the (wonderful) most recent tools. I see “low level” production type jobs disappearing because of that (such as CAD drafters) over the short and mid term. And: The more experienced people who do not use newer tools will not remain competitive.
