A whole lot of #PRfail

Have you ever searched for #PRfail on Twitter? It’s a saved search I access on a daily basis. Earlier this week I tweeted about the #PRfail, but the number of retweets made it impossible to see the content. I suspect this post is going to crowd the search a bit, however I’ve pulled my “six fail favorites” to share with you.

Instead of merely focusing on the negative:

  • Look at what frustrated the individual to cause the “fail”
  • Think about what you would have done differently
  • Learn from the mistake. Not in a “hey look at your big mistake” kind of way.

#1 via @eve4style: “Nothing says ‘Happy Holidays’ like a mass email, with recipients on CC (not BCC) from a company you’ve never worked with. #prfail”

#2 via @helenmayson: “putching* your client for an interview when we’ve just run a 6 page profile on them #prfail”

#3 via @yuliZ: “just witnessed the biggest #prfail to date. 5 pitches in 5 min from the same pr person about 5 different clients, none include intro text”

#4 via @iainmhepburn: “Yesterday – Extrabet.com apologise* for continual uncolicited emails. Since then? Two more emails. So. Extrabet – Spam artists. #prfail”

#5 per @KerryPowell: “Today, Dec. 16, I received my first press release pitching the perfect gifts for… wait for it… VALENTINE’S DAY. #prfail”

#6 per @HerbalGill: “Why would a PR person contact a cat owning, food blogger to flog dog food? #prfail”

I wish I’d hashtagged the #prfail when I, a government reporter, got a pitch from a famous college football player-turned-inspirational figure’s people, regarding high school football. Or the time I got a recipe book in the mail. Or the pitch I got today from a major soft drink company.

So many irrelevant pitches, so little time to read through them. Most pitches I get are destined for the trash bin. Research your audience!

people just don’t think before they hit send… its a shame really when compaines with good products just don’t know how to hit delete instead of send.

This is the 140 character version of the Bad Pitch Blog – I think it’s relevant and interesting to keep up with these sorts of examples, but we have to take all of these with a grain of salt and look at the context and the source. Some of these (not necessarily the six you picked out) #prfail examples are nothing more than people whining and complaining about something – not necessarily actual PR “lessons learned.” As we always do with social media, remember that these these are opinions of actual people – some will be relevant, helpful (and hilarious), and others will be worthless, petty, (and probably still hilarious).

The Valentine’s Day pitch isn’t unusual. Smart PR folks know that some publications prepare for issues months ahead. Valentine’s Day is less than two months away. But it goes back to knowing the publication. Sounds like this one obviously doesn’t look that far ahead.
