What advice would you give mainstream media to attract and retain an audience in 2010?
The title of this post was a question asked during tonight’s #journchat. Participants shared their opinions on the future of mainstream media and their audience. If you didn’t get a chance to participate, share your opinion in the comments section.
We had close to 100 responses to this question. I’m highlighting those that are representative of the chat participants:
- Practice good journalism. Inform first, entertain second. (per @hamiltd)
- And another thing: eliminate Q & A interviews…let’s get a picture/impression of the interviewee instead of something canned. (Per @prchicago)
- WE dictate the content. WE vote with clicks and views. News, in a real sense, gives us what we want. (Per @ctanowitz)
- Comment sections can’t go unmoderated. The anonymity of Internet doesn’t foster civility. (Per @bgluckman)
- Learn to engage your audience and participate in the entire news process instead of talking at them. (Per @KeeyanaHall)
- Share real stories that cover your niche, local, natl, and give your audience an opp to comment, react. (Per @sarabroderick)
- Not only allow readers/viewers to chip in on issues, but make sure they know they can, and give them incentive (attention). (Per @BrianManzullo )
- Let witnesses help tell the story. CNN’s iReport is a model for embracing technology and collaborating with its audience. (Per @CatherineEllen)
- Follow leads from citizen journalists, and use crowdsourcing for meaningful content (comments, photos), not just for polls. (Per @jennalanger)
- … all about service journalism. Create content that answers my questions, teaches me things, or activates me. (Per @JasonChupick)

Share real stories that cover your niche, local, natl, and give your audience an opp to comment, react.
Great information!

Gotta disagree about eliminating Q&As. I think they’re very useful. Good Q&As often show a side of the interviewee that wouldn’t come up in a standard interview. Because it’s a conversation, it carries into any different topics over the course of it. If nothing else, Q&As often help to humanize a subject, if they’re famous or well-known.

Agree with Ben on Q & As because it allows for interaction. Also, listen to what is relevant to today’s audience. Get on the net and participate and then report on stories important to people. Mashable are pros at this.

What I would say or advise is to make the experience special, and embrace social media more, especially television media needs to do this.

Sarah I think you need to concentrate more on the one about moderating comment sections. It seems like your blog has been flooded by spam a lot lately. There have been a lot more of the ‘thanx for post’ type comments lately.

@Aluminum, I totally agree with you my friend, if you notice too some of the comments are totally irrelevant, and appear that bots are leaving them, you can tell especially because if you copy/paste a portion of the comment you will find it on Google already.
Till then,
Jean
