What happens when a well known celebrity is behind in a charity fundraiser? He makes fun of people. Comedian Michael Ian Black will be making fun of his Twitter followers for charity between 2 to 3 p.m. EST on January 5, 2010.
Black is part of PayPal’s Regift the Fruitcake charity fundraiser to raise money for 25 charities including ASPCA, March of Dimes, Boys and Girls Club of America, Share our Strength, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Kiva.
The “Regift the Fruitcake” message focuses on the stigma of a fruitcake as the dreaded holiday gift that everyone winds up regifting. PayPal is taking the gift that nobody wants and is giving the gift that everyone needs (insert food for the hungry, money for the poor, shelter for the homeless, support and guidance for our youth, protection for animals). Every time people regift their online fruitcakes, they can donate to one of the 25 charities involved in the program.
While Michael Ian Black didn’t win the popular vote (the contest for most fruitcakes regifted ended last week), he’s back with a vengeance to raise more money. The campaign has raised more than $38,000 with Black’s Sunrise Community at $155.
The fundraising goes through January and he’s made it a laughing matter. (Lame attempt at a joke.)
He selected Sunrise Community as his charity of choice because it’s where his sister, who has down syndrome, is cared for. “It’s hard to say no to a good cause, especially when people are giving to something I choose,” says Black.
He knows that his online presence generates awareness, but not so much action, “To get people to take action is a huge undertaking…a difficult undertaking. You’re giving people a little piece of candy, but it’s hard to get them to eat their vegetables.”
Black is ready to take action and have a good time doing it.
Donate $5 to his “Regift the Fruitcake” charity, email your donation confirmation and get made fun of by Michael on Twitter.
With 1.5M + Twitter followers, he’s no joke.

The power of twitter is something else. Who could have thought that it would be such a smash hit when it was first announced to the world? Last year this time I was still wrestling with the value in the concept, but now I am a solid convert.

This is a great way for a celebrity to make a real difference with a charity. More celebrities need to jump on board charities like this. Instead of just using their fame for personal gain, they can also use that fame to help others in need.

Hello Sarah, i got one thought if you would like to consider it, is it possible to post such activities done by celebrity on your blog , so it may be helpful to create awareness or might prove encouragement for others as well.

This works two ways of course because your ad will be on the network which will bring in business for whatever you are promoting, so when your affiliate link gets clicked you will get credits to show your ad to other members and visitors. The more clicks you get the more credits to promote your ad.

Any update on how much money Ian raised with this promotion? It truly is a great idea. I love when people can put their skills to use to raise money for a good cause. It shows you can make a difference without having a big bank account.

Now that’s thinking outside the box. This is a great example of what I was telling someone about the other day. I think there is a ton of technology with lots of untapped potential. I’ve heard someone refer to this as RTI (Ready To Implement) technologies. I think the next 10 years will the greatest period of changes and advances in our history.
