What’s Next in Innovation: Social Media in 2010 and Beyond

What’s next for the public relations industry? It’s not about the “next” Twitter or “Foursquare.” It is about bringing structure, focus and strategy to the idea of social. Below is my recent keynote for the PRSA Travel and Tourism (#travelPRSA) conference. Feel free to add your thoughts and opinions in the comments.

It’s been said that “Social media is long on tactics but short on strategy.” Thanks for making the point that people need to define their “goal” before jumping in. There are many people who are using tools because their boss said they need to be on Twitter/Facebook/Foursquare…

Every PR person should show this presentation to their boss so they can understand how to “use” social media to achieve business goals.

It was such a pleasure meeting you in Aspen. I like a girl who can sport 4″ stilettos in the mountains like me! Maybe I’ll see you in Park City soon!

    Thanks again.

IT management is struggling with whether social media is productive or obstructive for companies and their employees. Software is being developed and policy and restrictions are being decided everyday by IT managers. The security of company networks are at stake but the potential for innovation using social media is a large enough carrot for the discussion of how to properly utilize the medium continues. Palo Alto networks came up with an webinar, http://bit.ly/cR80Al, that should be interesting exploring the issues surrounding social media in the workplace. It is important to not only understand the immediate benefits of doing business how one lives, but the threat it presents to a company’s greater ROI and productivity when it comes to the server’s safety and security.

This was a great presentation, not only did you get the word out, but you got many people contacting you for your input and how you felt. As well as getting really good links and exposure for yourself from very reliable companies.

I completely agree that the next innovation will not be a new twitter or foursquare. It simply takes too much time & money for a new platform to jump onto the scene and make a significant impact. Too many people are still trying to figure out the best ways to use existing platforms.

2009 was a phenomenal year for social media, with Facebook, Twitter and Youtube becoming part and parcel of everyday life. This development has been driven by the unprecedented growth of these and other online channels, resulting in the acknowledgement of social media as more than just a socializing tool.

The next big thing is decentralised social networking where you run your own profile on your computer or server and control your own privacy and information you wish to share.

Sorry for double post. I noticed your post about FB privacy but could not comment on it. Do you usually close all your old blog posts from commentators?
