50 Social Media Stats from #Commentz (Part 2)

Kristin Piombino, Sevans Strategy intern, has compiled the latest and greatest of #Commentz stats for your viewing pleasure:
- Online media at fashion week has grown 20 percent in the past six months, and now accounts for about 40 percent of the 3,600 members of the press covering the event. (Source)
- 35 percent of the companies hurt by social-media malware suffered financial losses, with more than a third losing in excess of $5,000. Further, a quarter of the businesses said they lost sensitive data due to employees who violated company policy by revealing certain information via a social network. (Source)
- 78% of companies said they use Facebook, Twitter, and other sites to conduct research, improve customer service, push marketing and PR initiatives, and ultimately boost sales. (Source)
- Among all social networks, Facebook took the dubious honor of being the top spot for malware infections (71%) and privacy violations (73%). Next on the list was YouTube followed by Twitter. (Source)
- To address the malware and privacy risks from social networks, 57% of those surveyed have social media policies in place. And most said they use staff to actively enforce those policies. And most said they use staff to actively enforce those policies. Further, 64% have formal training classes to teach employees the risks and rewards of social networks. - Another 40% of consumers said they would be willing to pay for a device and a monthly subscription fee for a mobile phone application that would send text and email reminders to take their medications, refill prescriptions or to access their medical records and track their health. (Source)
- 57% of physicians said they would like to use remote devices to monitor the patients outside of the hospital. (Source)
- 61.1% of web users visit social networks. This represents a 4.3% increase on the results in January 2009, when 56.8% of respondents said they use social networking. (Source)

- Founder and “caretaker” of Craigslist, Craig Newmark’s listing services in several cities are estimated to generate $122 million in 2010, and Adult Services makes up about 30%, or around $36 million, of that amount. (Source)

- Third-party Twitter apps have seen a 50% decline in early-stage investment over the past year. (Source)

- Nearly 20% of U.S. travelers have downloaded one or more travel-related applications for their smartphones. (Source)
- Of those travelers who downloaded travel-related applications to their smartphones, 47% used GPS functionality to find their way to a destination, and 46% searched for flight updates. (Source)
- Between April 2009 and May 2010, social networking site usage grew 88% among Internet users aged 55-64, and the 65 and older groups’s social networking presence grew 100% in the same time frame. (Source)
- Young people’s use of social networking sites grew only 13% between April 2009 and May 2010.(Source)

- One-third of respondents in a Gallup poll voiced a positive view of the advertising/pr industry (6% “very”, 27% “somewhat”). (Source)
