Music mogul Jermaine Dupri launches logo design contest via social media
- 15 Comment
Want to add “I designed the Global14 social logo” to your creative portfolio? Well, now you can.
Jermaine Dupri (JD) (@LTLline) and I launched the search for the next great social logo designer through a contest hosted on Global14. Announced tonight through JD’s Twitter feed, we are ready for entries.
What are the logo criteria? It should be a social media-ready logo to be used for all smart phone apps and other online collateral (keep social media avatar and app logo sizes in mind). Encompassing the Global14 brand, this logo will be THE visual representation of the online community started by JD.
Submissions are being accepted now through Friday, November 26 at 5:00 PM ET in the “Global14 Social App Logo Design Contest” group. JD’s favorite entries will be shared via social media and Global14 allowing his social community a chance to share their voice.
The winner will be announced on Tuesday, November 30 at 9 AM ET.
What do you get if you win? Full attribution of the artwork and a post about you and your skills on Global14.com and a chance to chat with JD via Skype or FaceTime (if you’re a Mac user). Plus we’ll let all of our online friends know about the great work you do.
Anyone can submit designs or multiple designs. All designs must be ORIGINAL IDEAS.
Questions? Email: prsarahevans@gmail.com.
UPDATE: This contest is for Global14 members. The logo is not for JD’s record label, but to promote the growing (and talented) members of the community. The contest serves as a way to boost your visibility not only in the community, but to create a visual identity for the Global14 experience.
About Global1
Global14 began as a place where JD could share his own news and offer a look into his life through social media. It has evolved into a fan-based community and forum where members can share their thoughts, ideas and creativity on many topics ranging from music to fashion to life lessons.

And this is why we are called “starving artists”. If crowd sourcing a logo, he should at least pay the winner. Will JD write a free song & collect no royalties in return for free designs?!!! Im affraid your talent pool will be limited.

Thanks so much for your feedback, Kim. Perhaps I’m of a different mindset coming from the content side of things. I followed a similar path writing for free (and continue to) for sites like Mashable, Technorati, PRsarahevans.com. I do this as a chance to showcase my talent and grow my credibility. I have inherently landed business out of this (and a lot of it). JD plans to promote the winner of this contest (as do I) in the hopes it will lead to future business. He is following the direction that has led to the success of the Gloabl14 community — community generated content. Of course, I do understand your POV and understand that it is a free logo. I look at this as an opportunity to discover the next great designer and offer them opportunities they wouldn’t have otherwise.

Regardless if they’re getting more opportunities from this, I still think the winner should get some kind of monetary compensation. It seems rather cheap for a multi-millionaire recording artist to not pay money for this kind of work. If I was a designer, I’d rather build my portfolio with work for paying customers.

What do you think is appropriate monetary compensation? Feedback is much appreciated.

…a gift card, a prize pack, something of value in exchange for the winning logo?

Chan: JD did the same thing Janet Jackson’s 20th anniversary CD and with Dondria’s freshman album. Both designers have had substantial business generated from the experience. What do you think would be an appropriate value for a gift card? What would you include in the gift pack? As a PR pro I put high value on awareness and reach…the winner will absolutely get that. And heck, based on suggestions here maybe we can come up with something else. Thanks for your comment!

I have to agree with those who believe some type of compensation is in order for the individual whose work is chosen as the visual representation of a growing social network. Granted there may be future work that comes out of it, there is also that chance that nothing does. It seems unfair for someone to use another individuals creation, for their own benefit. Most if not all contests usually have a “prize”, not just a pat on the back.
