AP Stylebook editors update email, other tech terms
- 8 Comment
David Minthorn and Darrell Christian, editors of the AP Stylebook, today announced Stylebook changes, with several focused on technology. These changes go into effect as of 3 a.m. EDT Saturday, March 19.
Recent changes include:
- email, instead of e-mail. (Other āeā terms, such as e-book and e-commerce, retain the hyphen,)
- cellphone, smartphone become one word. (No longer cell phone and smart phone.)
- handheld, n., hand-held, adj.
Use “tech terms” quite often? Here’s an up-to-date information sheet you can download, print and keep at your desk.
If you’re an AP fanatic, you can also purchase and download the iPhone app ($24.99). (It’s what I use.)

Thanks for the information, it is sometimes hard to know exactly how you should spell or word something

Thanks for sharing Sarah –
It’s important for students, young professionals AND seasoned professionals to stay on top of their AP Style game. By staying up-to-date with the latest changes, it also adds value to your company.
Although I have to admit, I get a few laughs from @FakeAPStylebook on Twitter, ha!

Is ‘cellphone’ uppercase or lowercase? It’s displayed as uppercase, but listed as lowercase.

AP style is dfinately still needed for PR – without it, the news won’t even look at our stories.

No matter what the vehicle for delivery of the information, I think it’s important to maintain a consistent style. AP helps with that. Now, if we can just get folks to proofread.
