Is 60 too old to become a programmer?
Programming has a reputation for being one of the most difficult disciplines to master. Considering how different it is from traditional forms of education, including college degrees in computer science, it's not hard to see why some people have difficulty learning how to code.
Anyone who wants to *can *learn to code and reap some real benefits from it. Coding skills are used every day by many, many people who aren't full-time software engineers. And despite what you might have heard, you don't have to be a “math person” or a “STEM person” to learn to program.
1. Naming things. The task: Coming up with names for variables, procedures, functions, classes, objects, database components, etc. The challenge: Even a small program or application can require the naming of many things.
Most coding bootcamps last 3-4 months and teach enough coding skills to qualify graduates for entry-level coding jobs. It typically takes 6-12 months to learn to code on your own. Likewise, a bachelor's degree in computer science or computer programming usually takes four years.
5 Signs that programming is not for you
- Lack of curiosity. Curiosity is a must-have trait to have for something so complex as programming.
- Lack of confidence. Before you start learning anything it is important that you have confidence in your own abilities.
- Lack of persistence.
- No interest in solving problems.
- Lack patience.
